Nagarjunasagar is located in Andhra Pradesh at 150 km from Hyderabad. It is most popular Buddhist centre and attractive tourist spot. It was called before as Vijayapuri. Nagarjunasagar got its name from Nagarjuna, a Buddhist monk, who governed Sangha for 60 years. It is a centre of propagation of Buddhism. Buddhist made this place a hub for learning and setting up one of the four Viharas. It is a place of archaeological innovation. One of the early river civilizations was here. Now Nagarjunasagar boasts of owning world’s tallest masonry dam, called Nagarjunasagar Dam. It was built in 1966; it is 1 24 meter high and1 km long. It is third largest manmade lake in the world. There is a view point at 4 kms away from the lake. There is one of the oldest hydro electric projects of India. Nagarjunasagar Dam is a symbol of modern Indian architecture. It is across Krishna River. There is a large reservoir made. It is also early multi-purpose irrigation and it gives water for many districts like Guntur, Khamma, Prakasham, Krishna and Nalkonda for irrigation. Power generation was the main purpose. This project by inaugurated by Jawarharlal Nehru. Nagarjunasagar was in forefront for green revolution. Steam boat rides are seen in Dam. The island of Nagarjuna konda is another attraction here. It is a scenic town upon the artificial lake. There is also Buddhist museum present. Epithothala waterfall is major attraction in Nagarjuna Sagar. Due to fall there a lagoon was created, which has been used for crocodile breeding in a large scale. The area is hilly, with high hills, gorges and deep valleys. They receive rain from south west monsoon and north east monsoon, so the rainy season here is June to October. The climate and the atmosphere are good for survival of animals. Hence there are wildlife conserves. During monsoon they may be seen in plateaus and during summer in Valleys, because plateaus suffer scarcity during summer. Wildlife reserve here was noticed since 1978, it was later declared as the tiger reserve in 1983. The reserve here is called now as Rajiv Gandhi wildlife reserve. Before independence this place was used for hunting by the royals. There are Tigers, Leopards, Sloth Bear, Wild Dogs, Pangolin, Spotted Deer, Sambhar, Mouse Deer, Black Buck, Chinkara, Mugger, Python, Peafowland Cobra are found in the reserves. The area has any geo morphological features rock shelters, cave temple, Akka Mahadevi Bhilam, Dattatreya Bhilam, Umaa maheshalivaaram, Kadalivanam, Palankasari are some of them. The town is situated near to Machrela, where majority of hotels and restaurants are present. Direct Bus services are available to Hyderabad and connection to all other parts.
