Kasauli is a small hill station in the Solan district of the state of Himachal Pradesh. Like most of the hill stations in India, Kasauli was also found and developed by the British during their colonial years in India, mainly as a cantonment. This place, which was once a colonial hill station, lies at an altitude of 1800 m asl, and is at a distance of about 77 km away from the more popular hill station of Shimla. A legendary tale tells that this small town of Kasauli came into existence when Lord Hanuman placed his foot on his way to find the Sanjeevani hill. It is believed that the Lord actually kept his feet on a hillock which is at a height of about 300 meters.
Bestowed with the beauty of nature and a wide variety of flora and fauna, Kasauli is a tranquil tourist destination which yet has to procure an important position in the tourism map of India. It is an apt place for those who want to spend their holidays in a serene destination. Long walks without any other human interference but only with the chirping of birds and the sound of cool breeze is what attract a lot many tourists to this place. The historic Sikh Gurudwara located in the Gharkhal bazaar on the main road towards Kasauli known as Gurudwara Shri Guru Nanakji, the Monkey Point which is the highest point in Kasauli where Lord Hanuman is believed to have set his foot, the magnificent Christ Church which has been built in the shape of a cross and the sunset point and Gilbert Trail are the main spots of tourist interest in Kasauli.
Sunset point offers a magnificent view of the nearby hill regions. Walk up from the Sunset point leads to a trail leading to another view point called the Gilbert Hill. Though not very famous and visited only by a few travelers, the view from the Gilbert point is breathtakingly beautiful and is in fact better than that from the sunset point. Gilbert hill is an army area and tourists should return from there by 6:30 pm. The main places near Kasauli visited by tourists are, Sanawar which is at about 6 km away from Kasauli, Jagjit Nagar at a distance of 8 km away, Dagshai 19 km away and Subattu. Those who want to reach Kasauli by flights can get down either at Shimla airport which is about 35 km far or Chandigarh airport which is at about 65 km away, from where buses and taxis are available to Kasauli. Kalka is the nearest railhead to Kasauli which is at about 45 km away. Kasauli is well-connected to Delhi and Chandigarh via road.
