Lavasa planned hill station
Situated in Pune district of Maharashtra, Lavasa is among the first planned cities in India. Located behind the Warasgaon Dam on the banks of Baji Pasalkar, Lavasa is popular because of the mountains and valleys that surround the region. This planned city is part of 25,000 acres of land declared for the ‘Hill Station’. A part of this land will be preserved to maintain ecology in the region. It is built around the 20 km long Warasgaon Lake. The hill station is being developed by a private promoter. Lavasa has been planned as an escape route for the city folks from the noise, chaos and dreary life of the neighbouring big cities.
The city was planned and built as per the principles of ecological sustainable environment and urbanisation. The master plan of Lavasa was prepared by a world- renowned design consultant. The progress of the work of the city was delayed by controversies. They related to the take-over of land and environmental clearance by the Department of Environment and Forests. The Department, in fact, had stopped the construction work of the city for the alleged violation of environmental laws. The department last year, however, granted permission to resume the construction work.
Till now, the construction of only four hotels has been completed. On the other hand, three schools have already started functioning in the hill station. The construction of Lavasa will not be completed before 2020. Lavasa will be the largest hill station in India once the work is completed. Lavasa will then have a population of about two lakhs spread over four or five towns. Set on the seven hills in the Mose Valley, The hill station provides opportunities for the visitors for adventure activities like mountain climbing, trekking and hiking. One of the prime attractions in Lavasa is Lakeshore. This place offers opportunities of adventure sports like boating against strong currents besides cruises and jet skiing.
The weather conditions in Lavasa, cradled in the heart of mystic Sahyadhri mountain range, remain cool and pleasant throughout the year. However, the best time to visit Lavasa is during the monsoon season. During the rainy season, Lavasa offers panoramic view of the lush green hills. Lavasa is well connected to both Pune and Mumbai. The distance between Lavasa and Pune is about 65 kilometres and it is about 180 kilometres from Mumbai. There are five road routes that lead to Lavasa from these two big cities. Pune is the nearest airport at a distance of about 49 km from the hill station. Pune is also the main railhead for Lavasa. At present there are only four hotels in Lavasa. These hotels provide all modern amenities to the visitors. There are some hotels in the vicinity of Lavasa.
