Demonetization was among the most crucial events of India in 2016 that impacted millions of lives. A new report by Labour Bureau recently stated that regular and contract workers’ jobs saw a boom while casual workers jobs declined due to demonetization.
About 53 thousand casual workers ended up losing jobs in 8 sectors in first three months of 2017 (largely due to demonetization) while job growth was seen in sectors like IT and manufacturing. Employment increased by 1.85 lakh across 8 sectors.
Sharing the results of the latest quarter employment survey, a wing of the Labour Ministry said that 1.97 regular workers and 0.26 lakh contract workers got jobs while 0.53 casual workers lost their jobs. From the 1.85 lakh positive job change, employees showed an increase of 1.70 lakh while self-employed experienced an increase of 15,000. It also mentioned that employment of casual workers reduced in six sectors covered in this study except in IT/BPO and accommodation & restaurant sectors.
The study highlighted that over the last quarter, there were positive changes across all 8 sectors as 2,000 jobs were created in manufacturing & education sectors, 3000 in transport, 13,000 in IT/BPO, 29,000 in trade, 31,000 in health and 1.02 lakh in manufacturing.
Sector-wise data on the impact of demonetization on jobs was also shared where manufacturing sector showed the most impact as employment increased by 92,000 employees. 66,000 jobs were created for regular employees, 48,000 for contractual workers while 22,000 casual workers lost their jobs.
Eight sectors studied in this report are trade, transport, construction, manufacturing, health, education, IT/BPO and accommodation & restaurant. The scope of this Quarterly Employment Survey is limited to accessing the employment situation in only those establishments that had over 10 workers during Sixth Economic Census (2013-14).
