A new study by LIRNEasia and ICRIER has stated that about 70-80 percent of jobs in India could easily be outsourced to freelancing individuals but companies are reluctant to take such steps. This study was entitled 'The Potential and Challenges for Online Freelancing and Microwork in India' and it took opinions of 1,976 respondents from India which included student and non-student freelancers belonging to Maharashtra, Delhi, Telangana, and Karnataka.
It revealed that freelancers are considered second grade as compared to permanent employees and people doing 9 to 5 jobs are considered superior. KP Krishnan, the Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Ministry Secretary stated that employment patterns, organization, and technology are playing a key role in changing not only India’s work environment but global work environment as well.
Rajat Kathuria, ICRIER Director said that there is a need to create awareness and boost right perceptions as prejudices related to online freelancing and microwork are indeed there. The traditional mindset that permanent jobs are superior to freelancing would not be changed easily.
A core aim of this study was to find the scenario of freelance jobs in order to address the underemployment issue in India. The Executive Vice Chairman and Co-founder of Info Edge, Sanjeev Bikhchandani said that there are many jobs in several sectors that cannot be outsourced but the percentage of jobs that could be outsourced in the service industry is probably as high as this study suggests. He added that a freelancer must also be an entrepreneur who competes regularly and acquires new skills on his/her own.
R Chandrashekhar stated that upskilling and re-skilling is the basic formula to ensure job safety and there is no alternative or shortcut to it. Reference :- http://buildyourorg.com/News
