A World Economic Forum report has stated that the proportion of unpaid work is quite high for women as compared to men globally. It also highlighted that 66 percent of women’s work is unpaid in India. This unpaid work includes average minutes spent per day in care for household members, shopping, routine housework, care for non-household members, etc.
This report also mentioned that just 12 percent of men’s work is unpaid in India. In China, 44 percent of women’s work in unpaid while 19 percent of men’s work in unpaid. Even in the UK, 56.7 percent of women’s work is not paid for while this percentage for men is 32 percent. In the US, 31.5 percent of men’s work is unpaid while 50 percent of women’s work is unpaid.
When the Global Gender Gap Index of last few years is analyzed, it highlights that underuse of education in women is more than ever before, Though the key reasons for this are institutional & policy inertia, discrepancy in care-giving and unpaid work, discrimination and outdated organizational structures, a little-known reason is also skills differentials in types of degrees men and women select during educational choices offered to them.
This report also discovered that the global average annual earnings for females was around USD 1200 while it was USD 21,000 for males. India has lost 21 places on World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap index and it now stands at 108thposition. It has slipped 10 positions since 2006 when WEF began measuring the gender gap.
