The Pritikin Diet was originally designed back in ye olden days in 1976 and since then over 75,000 people have visited the Pritikin Longevity Centres. That's right Longevity Centres. The Pritikin eating plan was originally designed to help people live longer and help those with type 2 diabetes. The weight loss was just an added bonus but is it an effective dieting plan?
Nathan Pritikin, the creator, describes it as "mankind's original meal plan". That's because of the huge focus on unprocessed straight from nature foods such as fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat and seafood. The Pritikin Diet is very low in fat were you are given the guideline of just 10% compared to the recommended 35%. Calories aren't that much of an issue in this diet you will be glad to hear however you do need to monitor your meals calorie density. For example a pound of broccoli has just 131 calories where as chocolate chip cookies have 2,200 calories. So your goal is to fill yourself up on these foods with a lower calorie density. You will be eating a lot of fresh fruit and veg on the Pritikin Diet because of their low calorie density and as they are high in fibre they will fill you up. So as you can see this diet restricts your fat and calorie intake which will lead to your fat stores being burned up faster. Well you are allowed to eat a small amount of lean meat and it's recommended you eat three portions of oily fish a week so you can benefit from the Omega 3 oils, which helps boost brain power and joint mobility. As it's the "mankind's original meal plan" you also need to run to the store to fetch all your groceries and power walk to work. Just kidding. It is, however, recommended that you do some form of aerobic exercise, such as walking or jogging, for 30 minutes everyday as well weight training two to three times a week. Conclusion The Pritkin diet plan does make sense! Unlike so many others I've encountered. It covers the basics such as eat fruit and veg and reducing your fat and calorie count which combined with exercise will help you lose weight. However there is one slight problem with the Pritikin Diet. By cutting your fat intake to just 10% your body will lose out on some of those essential fatty acids needed to help your body cells to function normally and healthy skin. It is also very hard to maintain such a low fat diet over the long haul.
