With the intent of serving in the United States Marine Corps, Themistocles (Themie) Karavites joined the Reserve Officer Training Corps, also known as ROTC, while attending the University of South Carolina. Through ROTC, he received a three-year scholarship, allowing him to focus on his studies in international relations. Themie Karavites went on to graduate with a bachelor of arts from the University of South Carolina and was subsequently commissioned in the Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant.
Initially stationed in Quantico, Virginia, Themie Karavites completed initial officer training, The Basic School (TBS), an institution aimed at educating military officers in administration and tactics followed by the highly intensive Infantry Officer's Course (IOC). Throughout his nearly six-year service, he held a number of posts, including infantry platoon commander of Alpha Company and company executive officer of Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines. Captain Karavites is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in in the Marine Corps Reserves. In his capacity as a Marine, he has been awarded two Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medals (NAM) and one Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal (NMCOM). He was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps January of 1999.
