Since 2004, Stephan Hittmann has served as President of the 911 FUND. Stephan Hittmann was previously the Executive Director of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY), where he oversaw all training and education for the Department's 17,000 uniformed firefighters and fire officers, EMS and civilian personnel. In the aftermath of 9/11, the FDNY experience inspired the creation of the 911 FUND, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to applying its collective knowledge from that disaster to enhance preparedness and response on a worldwide basis. Stephan Hittmann assists the 911 FUND in acquiring fire trucks, forestry vehicles, ambulances, specialized firefighting equipment, medical supplies, and more, then donating them to under-equipped fire departments around the world. As President of the 911 FUND, Stephan Hittmann also organizes teams of firefighters who visit fire departments around the world to provide training in prevention, response to and recovery from any emergency, be it natural or man-made. Such training fosters solidarity and fraternity as part of the greater firefighter ideals, promotes unit cohesion and active communication between first responders in any situation, and reflects the best traditions of the American fire service.
