How We Got Started
Shane Retina was founded by Dr. Thomas Shane, whose passion for medicine began in high school and led him to pursue a career in ophthalmology. Dr. Shane attended Emory University for his undergraduate studies, where he balanced his academic pursuits with a passion for swimming, even coaching a team. Influenced by a retina specialist who became his mentor, Dr. Shane discovered his calling in retinal care. He furthered his education at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, graduating at the top of his class.
Dr. Shane completed his residency at the prestigious Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, the top-ranked ophthalmology program in the United States, where he also undertook a rigorous two-year vitreoretinal surgical fellowship. During this time, he honed his skills under the guidance of some of the most respected vitreoretinal surgeons in the country and earned an award for Outstanding Achievement in Resident Research from the Florida Society of Ophthalmology.
With a vision to provide top-tier retinal care, Dr. Shane established Shane Retina in Sarasota, FL. His goal was to create a practice where patients could receive advanced, compassionate care for a wide range of retinal conditions.
