Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) serves the interests of more than 150,000 healthcare workers employed throughout the state of California in hospitals, nursing homes, and as home care providers. SEIU-UHW is headquartered in Oakland and maintains offices in Los Angeles, Sacramento, and other cities throughout the state.
Members of SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West work primarily in private sector hospitals and clinics of organizations such as Kaiser Permanente and Daughters of Charity. While SEIU-UHW includes a number of licensed vocational nurses, members account for a variety of professional positions, ranging from respiratory care practitioners to radiologic technologists. About 9,000 members of the SEIU-UHW’s workforce serve as vocational nurses and certified nurse assistants in elderly care facilities. Some of the state’s largest nursing home chains, including County Villa and Windsor, employ union members. The 60,000 members working as home care providers serve communities in 11 different California counties.
