Saint Albert the Great Priory is the residence for men from the United States and other countries who, as Dominican friars, engage in the studies that will prepare them for public ministry as priests or brothers. The total formation process involves philosophical and theological studies, prayer, and communal life on a peaceful 3.5 acre property located in north Oakland, California, where they can concentrate fully on their studies and prayer.
Saint Albert the Great Priory is a community of friars, aged anywhere from early twenties to early nineties, who follow in the footsteps of Saint Dominic de Guzman and together form a community which seeks a life of study, prayer, and service to the greater Church and the world. All the men take vows to follow the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and live according to these principles on an everyday basis.
As part of their faith, Dominican friars at the Saint Albert the Great Priory engage in personal and communal prayer on a daily basis. All the men come together every day to celebrate the Eucharist and to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, the daily prayers ordained by the Church. The liturgies are open to the public. Visitors are encouraged to check the schedule on the website.
