Herbert R. Sargent, a businessman from Hampden, Maine, runs a heavy construction firm with projects in seven states. Sargent has worked in construction since 1979, when he first worked as a laborer for H.E. Sargent, his grandfather’s firm. After he graduated from high school, Herbert R. Sargent took a full-time job with the family construction business. In 1984, he served as the foreman for a runway construction project at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine. Sargent oversaw projects of increasing complexity while working with his father and grandfather. He acted as superintendent on the reconstruction of a portion of the US 1 highway, the same stretch of road that his grandfather had constructed 50 years before. The Army Corps of Engineers gave the company a rare evaluation of “Excellent” for the construction of the $12.1 million ramp refuel support project at Loring, which he managed. After his family sold H.E. Sargent to a French company, Herbert R. Sargent left the firm and founded Sargent & Sargent. His new firm quickly acquired clients and earned awards. In 1994, the company won the “Build Maine Award for Fostering Engineering Excellence” after submitting an alternative foundation design for General Electric’s expansion that recycled existing foundation materials into the new design.
