Combining elements of punk and shoegaze, the Dublin indie rock quintet Gurriers emerged in the early 2020s with a raucous, urgent sound, delivering biting social and political commentary using half-sung, half-spoken lyrics.Their guitarist Mark MacCormack and football obsessive drummer Pierce Callaghan grew up together in Castleblayney, County Monaghan, a rural town in the north of Ireland. While much of the music that MacCormack introduced to Callaghan was heavy in nature -- leading them to see Metallica perform live together -- they also had an appreciation of melodic indie acts such as the Stone Roses and Oasis. Similarly, as a teenager, Dan Hoff -- Gurriers' lead vocalist and lyricist -- was obsessed with Blur but also fascinated with the fact that a heavy, riff-based song like Nirvana's ''Smells Like Teen Spirit'' became so commercially successful.
