Since 2008, Emily Hershenson has served as a clinical social worker with the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Her many responsibilities in this position include conducting initial screenings and psychosocial assessment of patients as well as providing counseling on research protocols maintained by organizations such as the National Cancer Institute. Emily Hershenson also facilitates multidisciplinary coordination of patient care, and promotes effective communication between medical teams and patients by educating healthcare providers. Additionally, she provides support to professional staff during end-of-life discussions and offers coping mechanisms to loved ones following a patient’s death.
Prior to taking her current position, Emily Hershenson held internships with the National Institutes of Health and the DC Child & Family Services Agency in Washington, DC, where she coordinated family meetings and provided support to staff. A licensed independent clinical social worker, she holds a master’s degree in social work from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Before becoming a social worker, Ms. Hershenson spent time as a professional figure skater with the Holiday Spectacular on Ice National Tour.
