Sylt is the north-easternmost island of Schleswig-Holstein and lies directly at the Danish border. It lies on the Wadden Sea and is home to Europe's first whale sanctuary. The word ''Watt'' is Frisian and means ''mudflats''. The area is typical of extensive mudflats and the islands they contain, a region that is constantly contested by land and sea.
