Since he purchased the 33-foot cruising catamaran Nine Lives in 1992, Captain Mark Pomerenke has lived aboard his vessel in the Bahamas and provided charter cruises to parties and families. Fully certified and licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard, he has logged thousands of coastal and blue water miles, including a cross-Atlantic trip from the United Kingdom after acquiring the Nine Lives’ replacement, Stray Cat. During this time, Captain Mark Pomerenke became one of the Caribbean’s most knowledgeable captains.
Captaining a large blue-water catamaran was not Pomerenke’s first career, or even his second. His working life began in 1960 when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he rose to the rank of master sergeant. Sidelined in 1976 by injuries sustained in an aircraft accident, he earned emergency medical technician credentials and a BA in health care sciences before transitioning into a civilian career in health care.
Pomerenke spent more than a decade in the health care management field, much of it at the helm of his own medical practice consultancy. He worked with new and established practices alike providing startup and ongoing administrative services until 1992, when he transitioned from a land-based to a sea-based life.
Captain Pomerenke’s maritime life lasted more than two decades, until 2013, when he transitioned once again, this time back to a land-based life in Phoenix, Arizona.
