An iconic Winslow, Maine, institution, Camp Caribou is situated on its own lakeside peninsula and has a history extending to the early 1920s. Operating under the name of Camp Winslow, it had the ethos, “don’t be common, distinguish yourself,” from the very start. The Lerman family purchased the 200-acre property in the late 1960s, with Camp Caribou hosting generations of young men who tested personal limits while enjoying the support of team-focused counselors and fellow campers.
Along Camp Caribou’s extensive private waterfront, campers can enjoy activities from canoe, kayak, and rowboat adventures to tubing and knee boarding and inflatable structures as well. Several competition inboard ski boats are also available to explore the breadth of a 523-acre lake. Campers have more than two dozen swim lanes to choose from at the waterfront, as well as a recently purchased water trampoline.
One common question asked by prospective attendees centers on what the “typical” camper is like. The answer is as multi-faceted and diverse as the campers themselves, with one unifying feature being a love of camaraderie and adventure. With campers ranging from athletes to those for whom Camp Caribou is their first extended outdoor experience, a common link is that they always ask, “What’s next?”
