Web Designer and Web Development: Two different jobs with one common goal |
Posted: July 4, 2016 |
To build a wonderful site, it is important to make it look beautiful as well as have good coding at the backend to get it online. A web designer uses various tools and software to design the face of the website like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign etc. Then this design is combined with the code to bring life to it and make it online. In most of the well established Web Development Companies, the role of both the persons is different and specific. But in some small companies, there is a one-man army handling the entire task alone. And one this is for sure, that either a person can be good at coding or he can be creative enough to build attractive and innovative designs. It is rarest of the rare chance that a person is master of both the things. So, it becomes essential to have a well-trained and experienced team of professionals that work together and bring out the best of their skills to get the website live. Designer’s Role A designer has to be creative and should be good enough to use his intuition and imagination to bring out their best for the website. These people need not be qualified in a specific field but can have a variety of degrees and certifications related to graphic design and arts. All this adds to their excellent sense of colour concepts, typography, spatial relationships, and user experience. While searching for jobs, they showcase their work portfolios to their potential employers. Developer’s Role It may seem that the role of the developer is the same as that of the designer, but it is quite different. The backbone of the website is in the hands of the developer as they are responsible for creating clean and technically sound codes. With good knowledge of specific development language like HTML, Jquery, JavaScript, and CSS they can build effective and user-friendly websites. Apart from educational qualification like computer science engineering and other certifications, logical thinking and technical ability are the main traits of a good developer. They are more focussed on specifics and follow a detail-oriented process. Bringing them both together Though the tasks of both the persons are different but they share a common goal of building a consumer-oriented site together to attract a maximum number of users and give complete customer satisfaction. But the role of both is confusing at times for a layman as even coders are trying to design the front end of their websites and vice-versa. So, it is expected that very soon we will get to see titles like the web designer/developer. At times, it gets challenging for a designer to convey his thoughts to the developer or vice-versa, but this is very important aspect while building a site together. To avoid this one should avoid using jargons and be open to ideas. If you are unable to express your thoughts or your point of view by words, then it can be explained by creating a working sketch or examples to meetings. Also, people with more experience in this field are handling both the tasks well and their combined skill-set is also in-demand. Many designers are taking an interest in how the backend is developed and learning the same and same is the case with the developers who want to try their hands on playing with colours and graphics. So, probably one has the knowledge of both the fields and is good as well, but it is guaranteed that one has to be “Jack of All Trades but Master of “One””.
