Stay up to date with Google News Get personalized news that matters to you With this simple, fully customizable tool, you can get news stories tailored to your interests delivered straight to you Why waste time hopping between news websites when you can get all the top stories in one place? Google News is a great port of call for news-gathering on almost any topic, and you can customize it extensively to your particular fields of interest. To access Google News, visit http://news.google.com; you need to log into your Google Account before you personalize the stories you see. Alternatively you can bookmark the news URL and have it as a separate link somewhere in your browser. When you open Google News, you see a search button, 'News', below the traditional search field. This means your search is restricted to news stories, with the most recent and most relevant articles appearing in results. Click 'Advanced news search' and you open a new window where you can choose your preferences for Google News results. You can also tailor your main news page to suit your needs. Click 'Edit news settings', which you can find by clicking on the cog wheel icon beneath the Search Bar - it sits at the top-right corner of the screen. This takes you to a new page where you can personalize your News results. Here you can sort it according to your taste in publisher, how many columns you want and how your articles appear when you select them. To adjust your categories, click on the pencil icon, scroll down and click on 'Advanced'. A new page opens with a list of categories, which you can edit or delete. Once you're happy, click 'Save' to get the Google News look you want. Deeper news Most of the time you'll find Google News very accurate. However, one of the most useful things you can do if you're still struggling to get the sort of results you expect is to use 'Advanced news search'. In Advanced Search you can enter exact dates and times of the news you're looking for, which helps narrow things down. Other features include the ability to create custom sections; a variety of sections to add or adjust to suit your news preferences; a Sort By feature that enables you to choose various levels of news popularity; and location-based news categories. HANDY TIP News search By clicking on the drop down menu beside the Search bar in Google News, you can access an advanced news search to fine-tune your results. You can choose what time, what day, and even what source to search from. STEP BY STEP Make Google News work for you LOOK FOR CUSTOM NEWS SECTIONS There are several ways to create a custom news section on Google. The first method provides an easy keyword form, which shows you a searchable directory of custom sections built by other users. ADD A SECTION TO YOUR NEWS LIST If you like a topic, click 'Add this section'. The custom topic is added to your category list on the left of the screen. If none of the existing custom directories appeals to you, click 'Create a custom section' and fill in the form. IN TOUCH Google Reader Get breaking news Delivered faster Reading the news on all your favorites sites each morning can be time-consuming, so use Google Reader to get it all delivered to one place For most of us, the morning usually consists of a nice brew, a spot of breakfast and reading the news. It's a British institution, but with all that's going on in the world, there's not nearly enough time in the day to sift through everything to find picks of interest. Thank heavens, then, for RSS feeds. An RSS feed is a link to a news blog, which can be subscribed to and read using a feed reader. The benefit of this is that you can subscribe to many news sites and read them later all in one place, which is faster and more convenient. One of the best feed readers available is Google Reader. Although it looks quite simple, it's very cleverly laid out, which makes it really easy to read, although setting it up can be a little difficult, so here's a few tips on how to use it. STEP BY STEP Keep up with breaking news GET AN ACCOUNT Go to www.google.com/reader. To use Google Reader, you need a Google account. If you haven't got one, set one up by clicking 'Create an account'. Once you've done this, log into Google Reader using the email address and password you used to create this account.) SUBSCRIBE The place looks a little bare, but that's because you haven't got any news to read, so you should subscribe to the news you like. If there's a specific news website or blog that you read, click 'Add a subscription, enter the name of the website (such as BBC news) and click 'Add'.
