We’re Poisoning Ourselves My friend was telling me the other day about a bug infestation in her apartment, and how she didn’t like the chemical powder in her cupboards. We are becoming more conscious of the "physical" and "chemical" agents that surround us and how they contribute to ill health. Yet what about the many "toxic" emotions that also make us sick? Ever consider the internal, unseen poisoning we experience? What am I talking about? Consider the real impact your emotions have.... when you feel scared, uncomfortable, distressed, depressed, sad, rejected….do you think this is nurturing your immune system? No; it saps your energy, pumps out cortisol , insulin or adrenaline and DEPLETES your vitality. In general, what mental and physical responses come up for you with:
"C’mon…these are normal human reactions, right? Everyone has them !" You might admit these emotions don’t feel good, but I bet you never considered them "toxic". Science is now finding that stress overload – negative emotions - is one of the main factors in many diseases. THAT’S what emotions can do to you. Still think they’re not toxic? This very perspective may explain why they keep appearing. We convinced ourselves they’re harmless. Like aspirin. No big deal…when you occasionally pop one. But take a lot and take them daily? Trouble. [Shoot, you can even overdose on water!] Fear can protect you. Anger can enforce boundaries. I get it. But I want you to CHOOSE and USE the emotion, not the emotion to choose and use you. Can you feel the difference? Bet your body can…. Repeated use of any emotion "anchors" it inside your mind/body. You end up holding it in your cells and it soon it becomes your default response WHETHER IT’S TRUE OR NOT. And what is the consequence of storing this toxic emotion inside your body? What does any poison do? It’s "killing you". It’s ok to ask yourself “Is this emotion appropriate here? Is it helping me? Is it just a habitual response?” The $64,000 question: Is there a healthier emotion to feel or thought to have right now? GO THERE.
