Depending on where you live in Manhattan, your opinion of popular restaurants may differ from your friends. If you live in Midtown East, you may not want to go down to Lower Manhattan for dinner. The same could be applied to those residents in Lower Manhattan, they may not want to go up to Midtown West to have dinner. The objective is to find what's popular or trendy in your own neighborhood.
The first place I would look to find out which restaurants are serving the best dishes is ny.eater.com. The have a list of all of the hottest spots to eat that dates back to December 2015. On March 1st, they published an article listing the current top 20 hottest restaurants in Manhattan. Most of them are in the southern section of Manhattan, but there is 1, at #18 called Massoni, in the Arlo Nomad Hotel on 31st Street in Midtown. The menu includes pasta dishes that range from $19 - $28, a brick chicken for $30, a New York Strip Steak for $68, and six styles of pizza.
The second place I would look to find a popular restaurant near my Manhattan apartment is the buildings website. Every apartment complex wants you to spend your money close to home. Websites, nowadays, don't just advertise for the apartment themselves. They want you to know everything that is going on in your neighborhood.
Take for example, the newest luxury apartment building on 39th Street in Midtown. House39.com has all the information you need to know about the building, the apartments inside the building, the amenity package that comes with being a resident, a list of current apartment availabilities, and yes, a page that tells you what is in the neighborhood. This page lists the 39 of hottest spots in the area including restaurants, bars, cafes, fitness centers, grocery stores and the nearest banks.
So, if you are looking for a great dining option in your area, check out your communities webpage. I'll bet you they have places you never even considered.
