How to Measure for a Kitchen Splashback |

Taking measurements for a kitchen splashback can seem like a daunting prospect. Particularly if planning to install a splashback of a unique shape and size, knowing where to start can be tricky. Attention to detail is, of course, essential. You need to ensure the splashback you are supplied with fits the intended opening flawlessly, with no excessive gaps and no imperfections. Irrespective of the shape or the size of the splashback you order, the basics of taking measurements are largely the same. If in doubt, consult with your supplier before placing your order that will provide the instructions you need to take the measurements they require. Here is a brief overview of how the process works: Step One – Take Measurements You will need to take a good quality tape measure and take the most accurate measurements you can of the space you intend to cover. Jot out a basic outline of the shape on a piece of paper, and then note the exact measurements down to the closest millimetre. You will be able to present this basic image complete with measurements to your supplier if you have any questions or concerns regarding its shape, size or configuration. Step Two – Expansion More often than not, your supplier will recommend adding an additional 2mm to each dimension of the splashback, in order to allow for expansion. This is due to the way that extreme temperatures (and changes in temperature) can lead to the very slight expansion and contraction of the material. An additional 2mm can make all the difference between a panel that expands comfortably and a splashback that bends, cracks or breaks under pressure. Step Three - Cut-Outs One of the trickier aspects of measuring for a splashback is indicating exactly where the cut-outs need to be. This is essential where a splashback is to be positioned over any switches or sockets. You will find it much easier to indicate exactly where your cut-outs need to be by drawing a basic sketch of your splashback and writing down all measurements accordingly. The same 2mm expansion gap around each edge needs to be allowed, in the same way as around the outside edges of the panel. Just be mindful of the fact that if any of your switches or sockets are not perfectly straight, this will need to be taken into account and the necessary adjustments made. Step Four – Fitting Fitting a splashback that has been precision-cut to order should be fairly straightforward. You simply need to use an appropriate adhesive to bond the panel to the wall, before applying a layer of sealer around the edges to create a watertight seal. If your splashback design consists of two or more panels, it is generally advisable to leave a gap of 4mm between them. Again, this is to allow for any potential for expansion or contraction of the material. Should you have any concerns regarding your ability to fit your splashback, consider professional installation. The greater the precision with which your splashback is fitted, the higher the likelihood of many years (or even decades) of maintenance-free performance.
