Using paper cups as a quick substitute to cups, made out of plastic material is considered as an environmental friendly option today. The fashionable look of paper cups is mostly liked by people as these cups exhibit outstanding features like convenient to handle, cheaper to manufacture, and are hygienic. Furthermore, infections can be avoided by using paper cups whereas sharing plastic cups or glasses are susceptible to diseases by spreading germs, especially at public places.
The launching of paper cups started in the year 1907 through innovation of Dixie Cup. Several changes have occurred in the production of plastic and paper cups. In 2007, about one million tons of paper cups and plates were produced while eight million tones of plastic cups were manufactured during the same year.
The journey of the disposable cup has been progressive since the introduction of the first paper cup. Plastic as well as paper cups cause less worry of clean up. They assist in conserving water as they do not require washing, even though they are not very eco friendly. The significant benefit of paper cups as an alternative to plastic cups is that they are the fastest and the cleanest biodegradable waste material. This reveals that these cups break down after sometime without causing harm to the environment. On the other hand, the time duration for plastic cups to degrade is very long.
It is interesting to observe that plastic and paper cups are produced from materials that can be recycled. Thus, these materials can save energy by not obtaining the required raw materials for manufacturing both these types of cups. The other benefit of recycling is that it lessens the quantity of waste deposited in landfills leading to efficient waste management.
Some of the other qualities of paper cups over plastic cups as an instant substitute are that they can be used safely in a microwave oven. They are also eco friendly and cost effective. Since they are recyclable, they help in the reduction of carbon emission. Paper cups are usually coated with wax or polythene material that make them water proof. Though the water proofing material pose a problem for recycling their durability is enhanced due to the coating of wax. They are ideal for storing cold and hot beverages.
The manufacturing method of paper cups is quite simple. Grinding the paper and mixing it with water can produce pulp out of it. Later, other materials are supplemented to this pulp for generating new cups that are one hundred percent recyclable. It is encouraging to see that these paper cups can be converted into fibers through recycling for using them in the production of other paper products. They can also be converted to produce energy.
Various designs, shapes and sizes can be seen in the production of paper cups. Their disposal does not pose any problem and the need for hiring a waste collector is not necessary. Recyclable products can be thrown in a recyclable bin without any hassle. This ensures that the paper cups utilized will be recycled. Paper cups can be seen in numerous shapes and designs. Besides saving money and assisting in the reduction of carbon foot print, they may help in spreading the name of the product.
