According to estimates, over 25 million visitors would be flocking to the expo, about 70% of whomwould be coming from overseas. The theme of Dubai’s World Expo is ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’, fostering the spirit of cooperation and partnership that has driven the progress of the UAE in pioneering new avenues of innovation and research.Through this theme, Expo 2020 would serve as a catalyst, bringing together minds the world over and inspiring participants to mobilize around shared challenges. The sub-themes of Dubai Expo are Mobility, Opportunity and Sustainability. This is the first time a city in the region of the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia (MENASA)is hosting an expo. Let’s take you through interesting trivia on the highly anticipated event. What is an expo?An expo is a large international exhibition of the industrial, scientific, technological, and artistic achievements of the participating nations. The first expo was hosted by England back in 1851 at London’s Crystal Palace. Then on, expos are held every once in 5 years – like a tradition. Some of the world’s finest inventions have been unveiled at these expos, including the telegraph in London in 1851, the typewriter in Philadelphia in 1876, the diesel engine in Paris in 1900, the colour TV in New York in 1964, IMAX film technology in Osaka in 1970, and wireless trams in Yeosu in 2012. Where will Expo 2020 be conducted?Expo 2020 will be held on a 438-hectare site located beside the Al Maktoum International Airport near Jebel Ali. The site is equidistant from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, hence serves for a fairly accessible location. How was Dubai chosen for Expo 2020?The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), a body of 167 member states that oversees selection and organizing of World Expos, voted in Paris in November 2013 to award the 2020 event to Dubai. The other competing cities were Izmir in Turkey, Sao Paulo in Brazil and Ekaterinburg in Russia. What preparations is Dubai undergoing for the world fair?Dubai is building nothing short of a mini city for Expo 2020. District 2020in Dubai South is going to be the hub and home of the World Expo.It will encompass6.5 hectares of residential space, 13.5 hectares of commercial space, and will house innovation, education, cultural and entertainment facilities.Perhaps the heart of the expo would be Al Wasl Plaza –a1.7-hectare pavilion that combines innovative technology, spectacular design, and an intricate domed trellis said to offer an immersive projection experience. How will the expo impact Dubai’s economy? It is predicted that Dubai Expo 2020would lead to the creation of 277,000 jobs in Dubai, and draw more than 25 million visitors to the UAE.Analysts believe the expo will benefit Dubai hugely in terms of tourism and infrastructure development. The government is expected to spend $7 billion to develop infrastructure for the fair. This will provide a huge impetusto industrial development. As per Bank of America Merrill Lynch, this spending will equate to a 0.5% increase in GDP in the period 2016-19. Even post the event, the government plans to make the site a hub to stimulate the development of knowledge and research. More than 80% of the site is planned to be reused or repurposed in its legacy phase. It will continue, after the event, to be a destination that attracts visitors, students and companies and harbours a combination of organizations including strategic industries, specialized technology companies, social entities and educational facilities.
