Many pool owners make the mistake of replacing a filter cartridge, when they actually need not replace it – all that they need to do is clean the cartridge. When a pool filter stops functioning efficiently, cleaning the filter cartridge is the first thing that should be done. The unwanted impurities gets trapped in the cartridge of the pool filter, thus for the proper functioning of the filter, it should be cleaned on a regular basis. It is advisable to clean the cartridge when a pressure of 10 pounds is observed above the start-up pressure.

So, if you have installed Harmsco pool filters in your swimming pool, your task of cleaning the filter will become much easier now. To start off with, make sure you remove the rim gasket as this will reduce the risk of damage to the cartridge during cleaning.
Normal Cleaning: The normal cleaning procedure can be conducted with the help of a normal pressure nozzle. Spray directly on the cartridge using the pressure nozzle to remove the dirt accumulated on the cartridge.
Removing Oil: In situations when oil coats the cartridge, the filter stops functioning in an effective manner. Removal of oil from the filter is not as difficult as it seems. Simply soak your cartridge in Tri-sodium Phosphate or a Tri-sodium Phosphate based product in the ratio of 2lb:10 gallons of water. Soaking the filter in the solution for 12 hours will help in breaking the coating of oil from the cartridge. Tri-sodium Phosphate can easily be purchased from swimming pool distributors or a retailers. Once the oil is removed, the normal cleaning procedure can be repeated.
Removing Algae: Coating of algae can be another reason for the poor performance of a filter. To remove the algae, the cartridge should be soaked in Tri-sodium Phosphate in the ratio of 2lb:10 gallons of water. Next, add 1 pint of pool chlorine as adding chlorine kills the algae and soak the cartridge for around an hour in this solution.
Removing Calcium: To remove calcium and mineral deposits, the cartridge should be soaked in 1 part muriatic acid: 20 parts of water. But before doing this, the pool owner should ensure that all oils are first removed properly. Do not use muriatic acid if there are any traces of oil on the cartridge. Once the oil is removed, soak the cartridge in the solution of muriatic acid and water.
