Australia’s largest city, Sydney, receives over 10 million international and domestic visitors every year. Visitors are drawn to the picturesque harbour, with its bridge and Opera House, the various beaches and a host of other tourist attractions. Sydney also plays host to some of the best festivals going around. From music to seasonal celebrations, here’s 6 of the best Sydney festivals.
Sydney FestivalA perfect start to the list, Sydney Festival encompasses all things Sydney, from ballet to punk protest music, and everything in between. This year, 2017, marked the 40th anniversary of the Sydney Festival, which is now one of Australia’s largest annual cultural celebrations. The festival describes itself as a “celebration of Sydney and its style and energy reflect the confidence, diversity and vigour of one of the world's most beautiful cities”. The festival is held every January, showcasing big ideas and cutting edge art and performance. With free events, the city gets quite busy so it can be a good idea to book a parking space on a site like Parkhound to avoid missing your event or paying expensive parking fees.
St. Jerome’s Laneway FestivalSt. Jerome’s Laneway Festival has asserted itself as one of the nation’s best music festivals. In what will be its 14th consecutive year, the 2018 line-up features the likes of Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals, City Calm Down and The Internet. Set to hit Sydney on the 4th of February, Laneway is set to be huge. The festival has come a long way from its humble, weekly shows at a hole-in-the-wall bar in Caledonian Lane in Melbourne.
Sydney Fringe FestivalComedy festivals have become some of the most attended events throughout the country but the Sydney Fringe Festival is now the largest independent arts festival in NSW. Every September, the festival brings a celebration of independent artists, art makers and performers. It’s not till September next year, but there is always a plethora of events, including things for kids, silent dinner parties, comedy acts, music and cabaret performances, and a heap of other attractions scattered throughout the city. There are tickets for each event which must be purchased separately, but there’s an event and price tag to suit everyone.
VividWinter usually sees city’s slow down as its inhabitants retreat to the warmth of indoors, however, Sydney has found a way around this. Vivid is the world’s largest festival of light music and ideas. Starting late May and running through to mid-June, the free 23-day festival is made up of three core areas, Music, Light and Ideas. This sees a range of activities for Sydneysiders to enjoy. For starters, almost the entirety of the CBD is transformed into ‘light art’ featuring sculptures and light installations, the entire Oprah House is lit up, for example. In addition to this, world class performers and speakers feature throughout the festival.
Sydney Blues and Roots FestivalThe ninth annual Sydney Blues & Roots Festival is set to kick off over the first 3 days of December, and tickets are still available! There’s a massive lineup of artists, including Kevin Borich Express and Rockin The Funkin Blues as well as food trucks, a record fair and a busking competition.
Sydney Christmas FestivalThe magic of Christmas is hard to beat and Sydney Christmas runs from the 25th of November until Boxing Day. There’s Christmas concerts in a range of locations throughout the festivals duration, providing excellent family friendly entertainment. There’s also light shows and other festive themed events.
