Pet Therapy in Addiction Treatment
| Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a form of complementary therapy that is used at some drug and alcohol rehab centers. AAT is guided by a specialist who has the appropriate training and certification. The therapist develops a treatment plan which outlines clear therapeutic goals, activities, and measurable objectives. During the sessions, the patient walk, brush, pet, and care for the animal. Also, they can get some tasks.
AddictionResouce authors say that AAT is not a stand-alone therapy. It has a number of mental health benefits (check in the infographic) that can motivate patients to complete a treatment program.
