Tikis
In American popular culture, tikis most commonly refer to wood carvings of human like forms . They feature proportionately large heads holding intense eyes, big mouths and are often in a crouching position with their hands visible in front of them. These tikis were influenced by the sculptures created by ancient Polynesian island cultures. Thousands of years ago tikis were believed to hold great religious significance to the ancient islanders but today they are more accurately like representations of the entire South Pacific island culture as a whole. They are captivating decorative wood carvings that people enjoy placing in their homes, seeing in restaurants and bars and think of when they conjure images of Polynesian life. Tikis appear in many sizes. They can tower over you in an outdoor setup, sit nicely on a table, or be wearable around your neck.
To some of the ancient island cultures, from what little we do really know since a lot of tikis were made out of wood and have disintegrated due to all of the time that has passed since their creation, tiki was the first man that was created on earth. Along those same lines are the belief that tiki sculptures represent life energy, fertility and procreation. Tikis are also said to be carved after Polynesian gods or ancient ancestors that had a significant impact and that their spirits are inside. If you mix two or three tiki gods together in one carving you get what is now called a tiki totem pole that can have many combined spiritual meanings.
Tikis really were an integral part in creating the entire modern tiki culture that we recognize today. Without them, tiki parties would just be island parties comprised of palm trees, tropical flowers, bamboo furnishings. They would lack the intriguing addition of the idea of the spirits of the ancient gods being a part of the décor and might not have turned the whole tribal island party theme into the beloved theme that it is today between old and young generations.
So when you are organizing your tiki themed setup, whether indoors, outdoors or on your own body, don't forget to incorporate tikis. They are a valuable throwback to the ancient civilizations that lived on this earth before us. Having tikis around is a great way to pass on cultural information in an interesting way from one generation to the next. |

Soon after, more restaurants sprung up all around the country! People from many different walks of life came to find the romantic, exotic and yet simple style of tiki restaurants irresistible. Tiki culture went through a lot over the years, such as surviving throughout WWII, and is considered kitschy to many but it really continues to live on!
Most commonly, tiki decorations are made out of natural elements such as wood, stone or other plant materials. They feature elements from the natural island surroundings such as palm trees, bamboo, the ocean, fire and many more. |
