A new Facebook trend has emerged: the Sellotape selfie.
People are wrapping their faces in clear packing tape to create grotesque caricatures of themselves. They take a photo of themselves, and then post the contorted selfie on Facebook. Sellotape is a popular British brand of clear tape often found in office environments.
As with the neknomination drinking game trend, people who post a Sellotape selfie on Facebook then nominate a friend to do the same.
According to the Daily Mail, the new wrinkle on selfies was started by 21-year-old college student, Lizzie Durley, who was inspired by Jim Carrey’s antics in the movie, “Yes Man.” She showed off her twist on the selfie craze to her friends, and it quickly went viral online.
There is now a dedicated Facebook page to the Sellotape selfie trend, which has well over a 100,000 likes. The page cautions that only responsible adults with supervision should attempt this stunt.
As with anything that goes viral, there is no telling how long this trend will stick around.
