Facebook "likes" are protected speech, court rules Facebook users who "like" a political cause are engaging in constitutionally protected speech, according to a ruling by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Likes are "the Internet equivalent of displaying a political sign in one's front yard, which the Supreme Court has held is substantive speech," Chief Judge William Traxler wrote in the unanimous opinion. Both Facebook and the American Civil Liberties Union issued statements praising the ruling. Reuters (9/18), The Wall Street Journal (tiered subscription model)/Law Blog (9/18)
