What are your options if you wear prescription glasses and need to wear safety glasses? |

It can be difficult to make the choice between vision and safety at times – when you wear prescription glasses, but need to switch them out for safety glasses due to either work, hobbies or varying circumstances. After all, giving up your ability to see can be just as dangerous as giving up your eye protection – so what exactly are your options? As it so happens, there are plenty. From little tricks that allow you to wear both your prescription glasses alongside fit over glasses or goggles, to crossing the two ideas into one to procure prescription safety glasses, you have lots to consider.
Can you wear both? If you’re not opposed to some temporary discomfort, then you absolutely could. It depends on the safety glasses in question, however – wearing your safety glasses over your prescription glasses isn’t always going to be a possible solution. If we’re talking about lab goggles, then there’s a much better chance of pulling this off successfully. Most kinds of goggles are bigger than average, and retain some space behind the lenses that would allow you to wear your glasses – though this may also depend on the size of your glasses, whether they’re slim or wide. Not to mention that in the right context, you can expect the splash safety of the goggles to be somewhat compromised as a result of this tactic. So it doesn’t come as the most highly recommended solution. After all, it doesn’t work with most types of industrial work glasses, or even in safety glasses used for sports.
The pricier solution? Of course, the easiest of all these solutions is to simply purchase some prescription safety glasses. It isn’t any different from buying regular glasses, with the process of a sight inspection to judge what types of lenses you might need, and a fitting of those strengthened lenses into an equally strengthened frame. A similar process can be undergone for prescription safety goggles, if you need your equipment for a lab environment of any kind. It’s a far more fitting solution, and provides far greater comfort than you’d get from your regular glasses getting pressed up into your nose from behind your safety goggles – a pain many were familiar with before the convenience of prescription safety glasses. You can choose your types of prescription safety glasses based on what your needs may be, whether it be a hobby of woodworking at home, working in a lab environment, or at a job where flying debris is not only feared but even expected – even when doing mild to extreme sporting activities, in which case your ability to see would be fairly important, you can find the types that best fit your needs without much issue. Prices on prescription safety glasses can range anywhere from £15 to £600, and the price is often telling of the quality of the glasses. It’s also important, in this sense, to weigh the dangers of your environments and decide for yourself how much you need to spend on your personal eye safety.
Try goggle inserts! Not an option you’ll find with all types of safety specs, but certainly a good one if you need a prescription option for any sporting activities – particularly skiing, which carries its own fair weight of risks without proper visibility. Goggles inserts are a way to see through your prescription lenses while still retaining your eye safety. These are, in essence, ski goggles that allow for prescription lens inserts. Often you’ll have fixed insert types, and other times you might find goggles with universal inserts. Either way, this provides a way to wear your safety goggles while still being able to see through your prescription lenses, given that prescription safety goggles can often be a rather expensive investment. You have plenty of options to consider, and not every one of them will be available to you, as is inevitable. Some solutions may not apply, and others may cause too much discomfort to commit to continuously, so in the end it’s always going to be up to you to decide – what fits you best, and how can you get your hands on it? Once you know that much, you’ll know what you need.
