Introduction The best way to live your life is to respect others and not try to criticize them or get involved in their business without their permission. To do this, you have to know how you can create positive relationships with other people. Furthermore, when you build good relationships with other people, you form a supportive system. Thus, you live a much more fulfilled life knowing that people can help you when you need them, and you can do the same.
Tips on Building and Maintaining Positive Relationships 1. Accept People for Who They Are When you talk about building rapport with people, you have to know that people may not always share your beliefs. You have to understand that human beings are different because they have free will. Your neighbor may not like dogs because that’s just how they are. Learn to accept people as they are without trying to change them. It shows that you respect and care about their feelings. As a result, they are more likely to form a good relationship with you.
2. Pay Attention Another way that you can maintain a positive relationship is by giving people your time when they ask for it. I am not saying that you talk to everybody because you also have other things to do, but if someone approaches you with a genuine issue, pay attention to them. Don’t try to text or do something else as they are talking to you because you can come out as obnoxious and self absorbed. If you can’t help them, tell them politely, and be on your way. When you give those around you your time, you show them that they matter. Hence, you build and maintain a good relationship with them.
3. Communication Another way that you can establish positive relationships with people is by practicing good communication skills. If you have something to say, make sure that the words and pronunciation are clear for the other person. Maintain eye contact and ask them if they have understood the message. You should also pay more attention to your posture and the audience. When you speak to a person, avoid closed postures since they show disinterest. Put your hands to the sides and avoid crossing your legs. You should also pay attention to the other person’s body language. If they show some negative postures, try to engage and make it more about them to gain their interest. People appreciate a good communicator, and they will enjoy being around you.
4. Teach Yourself to Give Constructive Feedback People are afraid of telling others when they are wrong because they don’t want to be hated. However, the truth of the matter is that no one is perfect, and everyone makes mistakes. If you see someone that you know is doing something wrong, tell them about it in a way that’s not offensive. Learn to give constructive criticism, and people will appreciate you for wanting to help them grow. Sometimes, it can be the other way round – you can be criticized for doing something. When that happens, don’t act defensive or aggressive in any way. Learn to take criticism. You can decide to either use the information to help you become a better person or discard it.
5. Trust This point can be controversial for some people, but it is very important if you want that positive relationship to last. Learn to trust those that you love, and you will be less stressed or worried. There’s no point in having doubts about a person whose presence you enjoy. Learn to trust the other person the same way that you trust yourself, and you will enjoy being in that relationship.
6. Mobile Phone Etiquette Almost everybody around you owns a mobile phone. It becomes so annoying when you talk on the phone so loud that the other person gets irritated. Teach yourself some phone etiquette and be mindful of how you use your phone around others. If someone talks to you, put away your phone and listen to what they have to say. After they finish and leave, you can resume ‘playing’ with your phone. The same is true when you’re in a meeting, switch off the phone or put it in silent mode to avoid disrupting the speaker.
Conclusion It doesn’t matter whether you’re reserved or talkative, we all need human connection. Follow the above tips if you want build and sustain positive relationships.
