Mahashivratri is a festival celebrated in the honour of Lord Shiva “The great night of Lord Shiva”. It is considered as one of the most significant sacred festival of India. The festival falls on the 13th night (waning moon) and 14th day of the month Phalguna (Magha). This year celebrate Mahashivratri on 13th February, Tuesday.
Mahashivaratri marks the night when Lord Shiva performed the ′Tandava′. It is also believed that on this day Lord Shiva was married to Parvati Ma.
The planetary positions on Mahashivratri is the most powerful. By practicing meditation and yoga on this day, religious penances are carried out to gain boons. Hence, this day is a great and unique opportunity to make use of the natural forces for our wellbeing.
THE HISTORY OF MAHASHIVRATRI:
According to ancient legends, Mahashivratri marks the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is also believed that on the night of Mahashivratri, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava dance. On this day, Lord Shiva saved the world from a pot of poison that emerged from the ocean during Samudra Manthan, by drinking it.
MAHASHIVRATRI CELEBRATIONS:
On this day, devotees remember Lord Shiva, chant prayers (“Om Namah Shivaya”), fast, do Shiva yoga, visit temples and some even keep awake all night (jaagaran).
Also by chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is considered powerful and one can seek the blessings of Lord Shiva on this day. The mantra is -
Om Tryambhakam Yajamahe
Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam |
Urvarukamiva Bandhanan
Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat ||
While praying and chanting the mantra’s to Lord Shiva, it is considered the best to do the chant with a Rudraksha Mala. One can also offer Rudraksha Malas to Lord Shiva to seek his divine blessings.
Rudraksha is a Sanskrit word consisting of the name Rudra (“Shiva”) and ak?a (“Teardrops”). The Rudraksha Mala is very close to Lord Shiva as it is said that the Rudraksha is formed from the tear of Lord Shiva. Also, the lord himself adorns one.
