Speed Humps in Rural Communities |
Posted: February 11, 2014 |
Most people would think speed humps are a feature of city centre and suburban environments, but more Australian rural communities are considering installing these excellent road safety devices. . With the increases in drunk driving incidents and with innocent people (often young children in school zones) suffering loss of life on a daily basis, in problem areas steps need to be taken immediately to create a safer environment for residents. . Best Places for Speed Humps in a Small Community. Within the town limits, the best place for these features is on long and straight roads, where offending vehicles are more likely to be speeding. By placing a speed hump every 2-300 metres on long roads, vehicles will be forced to slow down. You can encourage them to slow down in other ways, but most municipalities find that the most effective is simply to install bumps and not even ask. . Speed bumps are also useful to slow traffic down before it arrives at problem intersections. Many small communities have this issue and they find that by forcing traffic to slow down even before it enters the crossing, there is more chance of the laws being respected. . Just outside the town limits is another place where speed humps make a good addition. Of course, it will not be possible to put these on a highway, but if you have any other roads which go into the town, then you might like to consider them. Vehicles sometimes forget to lower their speed as they approach and the speed humps will force them to do so. Other Useful Devices for Town Traffic Planners. Bollards are a useful way to block off certain roads either on a permanent basis (with access to certain people) or as a temporary measure to deal with an event. Expanding barrier systems can be used to control both pedestrians and vehicular traffic at these times as well.
