Many people are not aware that there is more oxidation on siding then on wood and vinyl. There are a number of reasons for this. It is not as though the paint on vinyl will not get oxidized even with time, because it is composed mostly of plasticizer.
The cement on wood siding however, cannot be chemically treated in this manner. If you have any sort of paint on the siding, you are very well aware that it will eventually start to degrade. If you leave your siding untreated for long periods of time, it will begin to turn yellow and brown. This is why you never want to leave the siding unpainted, because the color of the siding will not recover. You can however, have it stripped off and then be able to re-stain it.
But before you decide to take this course of action, it would be wise to test the wood siding first. You could simply take some wood stain and leave it to sit for a couple of days. Once it becomes brown and yellowed, you can go about stripping the cement off. Of course this will only work if the cement has not been there for quite a while. If it has been a while, you will see nothing more than peeling off.
But if you strip the cement off and then re-stain it, you will notice that there is still oxidation on the siding. But it will be much less than if you left it bare. If you do not like the idea of having the siding bare, you can then apply a layer of cement paint. This gives the siding a nice even color.
Or you can have some cedar shingles put on the outside of the home, which will help to give it an old-fashioned country look. Cedar has a natural rustic charm to it. The shingles will allow the sunlight to filter through them and gives the siding a cooler appearance. You can purchase these shingles at any hardware store or home improvement outlet. They are relatively inexpensive and can easily be painted.
Another option is a hard coat of paint to put on the outside of the house. The paint will help to make your siding appear new for years to come. You can find these paints at home supply stores as well as some hardware stores. They will cost you about $30. Just make sure that you get one that is specifically designed for siding.
