Bearded dragons, or Pogona, are a species of reptile that originate from central Australia. While there are several types of beardies, Pogona Vitticeps are the most common ones found for sale in the United States. They come in a variety of colors and can grow up to 24 inches long when fully grown. In their natural habitat, bearded dragons live among rocky and wooded areas where they have access to hiding spots, sun, and food. They enjoy climbing and can often be found sitting on fence posts or porches. Beardies mainly feed on small insects and tiny animals for protein, but they also consume green leafy vegetation for nutrients and water. Watermelon is another excellent source of water for them since they love it and it contains around 50% water. Initially, beardies were smuggled into the United States, but they have since been bred and distributed across the country. They are available for purchase from breeders and pet stores, usually around six to eight weeks old and five inches long. The colors of bearded dragons vary, depending on the genes of their parents, and can range from shades of brown to black, white, red, orange, pink, and even include blue and green tones, with unique patterns on each beardy.
