The older Internet protocol, IPv4, supported more than 4.2 billion possible addresses. We eliminated individual numbers some time ago and had to add rules to expand the network nodes. Then came IPv6. The potential number of nodes for the "new Internet" is 340 trillion or 40 340 billion.
