If you are planning to go on a hike or you just live in an area where animals go around freely you must know how to avoid wild animal attacks. Even if you don’t plan a face-to-face meet with a bear or a leopard, this might happen so you should know how to handle the situation. Prevention is the keyBefore thinking how to avoid an attack, the better way is to prevent it from happening in the first place. So how do you that? What’s your purpose for being there? There are a lot of things to do when visiting Mother Nature such as hunting, camping, going for a walk, fishing or simply enjoying a free afternoon. However, before you go on an adventure, you must do a quick research on the location so you know what to expect. Animals have amazing instincts and, if you are going hunting, for example, they might sense your intentions attack if they feel threatened. What things are you carrying? You have to know what certain things might attract animals or scare them and thus, consider you a threat. Also a very important thing here is the food. Animals can smell food from miles away and they will invite themselves to a feast. Some people just like to feed the animals they encounter but this is not a clever thing to do because they won’t have enough and might attack you looking for more. The best way is to pack your food in a container that hides the smell and eat while you walk. Also don’t leave any trash behind. Are you alone or with friends?Being in a group is the best way to scare off predators. If you are alone, some animals will see this as a weakness and attack without second thoughts. Either way a loud conversation or some loud noises will scare off the predators and they won’t approach you. The worst situation you might find yourself in is being alone and injured. If this happens, you must treat your wound as fast as possible. What smells attract animals?Besides food there are a lot of different smells that will attract or irritate wild animals. For example perfume, cologne, or bug repellent. Even your personal scent can be attractive when you want it the least – for instance, women have a higher chance to be attacked during their menstruation. That’s why it’s important to know what animals exist in the location you’re going. Are you going close to a nest or lair? The cause of many attacks in the wilderness is getting too close to nests and lairs. The mother will always do her best in defending her family and will perceive almost everything as a threat. In this case you should back away carefully if you have the time or prepare to defend yourself. What do you have to do when the wild animal attacksBearsIf you have no other choice to back away from a bear, you can try to scare it off with a loud noise like an air horn or by screaming as loud as you can. Also some pepper spray might give the chance to think fast of a solution like throwing rocks at it. Another thing you can do is to play dead by staying in fetal position and if the bear tries to roll you over, roll in that direction but stay with your face down. Don’t try to wrestle a bear because the attack can only get worse. If you can’t do anything try to cover your face and neck with something while trying to go away from it. SnakesIf a snake bites you and doesn’t go away after this, you must keep your calm. First you will have to identify the snake and see if it’s venomous then slowly move away from it. Do not suck the venom out! This can only make the injury worse. Wrap the bite with a piece of clothing and don’t panic or start running. If you raise your heart rate the venom will spread faster. You must go to a hospital as quick as possible. AlligatorsWhen you are on land you can run away from an alligator but the real problem starts when you are in the water. If this happens get to land as slowly as possible but if it comes after you then you’ll have to look for something to fight with. You can try to shove a stick down its throat or if you are already in its jaws they will try to roll. In this moment you will have to fight for your life with all you’ve got. SharksAn encounter with a shark will frighten you to death but still you must remain calm and don’t do any sudden moves. You will have to get out from the water as slowly as you can. Some people advise us to punch the shark as hard as we can in the nose or in the eye but this can be very difficult to do because you won’t have a clear vision of what’s going on and you might put your hand right in its mouth. Wolves/Coyotes/Wild DogsIn this situation running is not an option. You must find a stick or something to protect you with and go ninja on them. You must protect your neck and your chest and get away from them without running. After that you must immediately wrap your injuries with your shirt or with a piece of clothing and go to a hospital immediately. Even if you take all the measures to prevent an animal attack, sometimes it just happens and the only way to get out of this is to stay calm and focused. You must have an escape plan in any situation and always have a weapon on you like pepper spray, loud horns, sticks, etc. You have to respect the nature and the territories of wild animals so you can safely make it back home.
