Cinema has always been one of the most popular ways to visit and relive the various events in history. Be it great wars, or events like a technological breakthrough or stories of some of the world’s greatest leaders and revolutionaries, cinema has depicted several actual events of historical importance that must be seen by every movie buff or an aspiring filmmaker who has just started fiddling with their camcorder. While it would take a real long time for us to compile list and for you to watch them, so we have just made a list of the top 5 movies based on historical events that you must watch. 1. Schindler’s List

Co-produced and directed by movie master Steven Spielberg, the motion picture is based on the novel Schindler’s Ark which tells the story of a German businessman named Oskar Schindler who employs 1,200 Polish Jews in his factory in Nazi Germany, saving them from the Holocaust. The movie starts the silver tongued Irish actor Liam Neeson who played the role of the titular character, with supporting actors like Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes. The movie was nominated for several categories at the academy and the golden globe and won in several categories including best motion picture and best director. This movie is indeed a fine example of artful cinema that leaves a lasting mark. 2. This movie shows how artful and emotional martial art movies can become. The movie is a biographical story of Ip Man, the famous Wing Chun practitioner and the martial arts master of Bruce Lee. The movie depicts Ip Man’s life and times in Foshan, China during the 1930’s and talks about his escape to Hong Kong following the Japanese invasion of China in c. Chinese actor Donnie Yen plays the role of the Wing Chun master and delivers it to the audience like a pro. Be it the screenplay or the stunt choreography, the movie is a definitive hair raiser. Unlike other conventional martial arts movies Ip Man is more of a periodic drama with a real life martial arts master thrown in the mix. Ip Man is indeed a perfect blend of Chinese cinema with every element used in a perfect quantity. 3. Life is Beautiful I accidently happened to watch this movie as there was nothing else on TV and to my surprise this became one of the best romantic dramas set in the back drop of a war torn country. The movie is depicted in 1939 Italy and is centered on the life of Guido Orefice who uses his comedic charms to meet the love of his life and later uses the same qualities to motivate his son in a concentration camp. The movie starts Italian actor Roberto Benigni who does something which resembles the work of artists like Charlie Chaplin. The movie won several academy awards in the foreign film category with Roberto Benigni winning the award for the best actor. 4. Munich
Image credit Wikipedia If you’re too bored with World Wars and the Holocaust and want to see a movie depict something totally different and awesome, you must watch Munich. Released commercially in 2005, Munich tells the story of Avner Kaufman a Mossad agent played by the Australian actor Eric Bana. The story follows the events of 1972 Munich Olympics where 11 Israeli athletes were kidnapped and executed by the Palestinian terrorist group Black September. Munich is based off the novel Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team by George Jonas that tells the story of Operation: Wrath of God. The operation involved an actual assassination campaign launched by the Israeli secret service Mossad against the key members of Black September. If you like espionage and political thrills, Munich will for sure quench your thirst. 5. Inglorious Basterds
Directed by Quentin Tarantino, the movie was released in 2009. The story is set in 1941 in Nazi Occupied France and is centered on a group of Jewish- American soldiers who are dropped in enemy territory with a mission to assassinate the Nazi leaders Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels. While the movie is not based on actual events, it totally manages to deliver the environment of a real event. The movie is a unique blend of dark humor, drama and a style uniquely portrayed in Tarantino’s movies. The movie features an all star cast of some of the most esteemed actors like Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, Eli Roth and Diane Kruger. While there are several famous movies that didn’t make it to the list, we simply wanted to compile the movies we thought portrayed historical events in a manner not many movies do. For the old school 16 mm movie buffs, you can also preserve your favorite historical movies by converting 16mm film to dvd. This not only protects them on a more durable format, but also enhances several features like audio and picture clarity.
