Your roof doesn’t just protect you from your elements; the shape and the materials help contribute to your home’s overall design and appearance. In fact, changing your roof can be one of the best ways to update your house’s look and make it look brand new. Here are some of the different roofing materials and the pros and cons of each type. ASPHALT SHINGLES This is one of the most common and arguably the best roofing material because of it’s affordable price and easy installation. They also come in many different colors, which lets you pick the one that matches your wall paint. The texture of asphalt shingles also matches many architectural styles. Unfortunately, asphalt is not as durable as other roofing materials, and it doesn’t help with the insulation of the house. TERRA COTTA TILE ROOFThis is a very beautiful roofing material that can give your home a very elegant, Old World charm. They are quite common in Tuscan-style architecture. If you are getting terra cotta roofing material choose tiles that are rounded so that water can drain out easily. CLAY AND CONCRETE TILESClay tiles (and its more affordable alternative, concrete tiles) are a great way to add interesting texture to your roof. They are perfect for homes with Mediterranean, Southwestern, or Spanish style architecture. While they are traditionally flat, you can also get special ribbed or scalloped tiles. A roofing map of the US will show that these type of exteriors are mostly found in the Southwest desert areas. These tiles are very durable and resistant to fire. Concrete tiles are also considered to be one of the most energy efficient roofing materials. However, they are quite heavy. Before installing them, make sure that your house’s foundation can support the additional burden. And be prepared to spend a penny – they don’t come cheap! Choose you roof material wisely as it’s the first line of defense between the exterior of your home and mother nature. A quality roof can be the difference between a great home or one that always has leaks and damages.
