A person's life is marked by numerous special occasions and wedding will top all of them. India, a culturally diverse country, is known for its wedding ceremonies, differed by where they take place. A wedding ceremony in the Northern part of the country is an antithesis of what we see down South. It also differs by religions. From groom/bridal attire to rituals and practices, one can find a striking contrast. Traditionally Indian weddings took place over three to four days, even in villages. Close relatives and friends used to arrive for the occasion, days earlier. However, this practice has slowly disappeared. Urbanisation seems to have shrunk the ceremony into just a one-day affair. While the wedding rituals take place in a temple or hall, the reception is held an evening before. Tamil brides and grooms deck themselves with traditional sarees and dhotis on the big day. In urban Tamil weddings though, North Indian wedding outfits are more than an exception. For generations, food was served to guests seated in long benches by the family members and neighbours. Today, the entire catering work is left to third parties and buffet-style dinner is served even in small towns. Weddings of rich Indians are now a business worth billions of dollars. They invariably involve a dazzling display of fascinating wedding cars. Some of them are owned, and some are hired, thanks to car rentals.
