Buying a wig for the first time can be a daunting experience. Where do you start? And when you have it, how do you look after it? As good wigs are not cheap it is very important that you think about this carefully and choose the right wig for you.
Basically you will have a choice between real hair wigs or synthetic fibre wigs. There are pros and cons for each. As your wig will be a very important part of how you present yourself to the world it is wise to choose the best quality wig that you can afford. As synthetic wigs are cheaper this might be the best option for you if you are on a tight budget. Amore Wigs do a fantastic range at affordable prices. Synthetic wigs need much less maintenance than real hair wigs and don’t have to be continually restyled. This makes them ideal for people on the go! Human hair wigs require more care but are much more flexible. They can be coloured (but do not use bleach products) and curled with heated tongs. You will find a great range of human hair wigs among Ellen Wille Wigs.
Opinion varies about how often you should wash your wig but around the tenth time you wear it is probably best depending on how dirty it is, where you have worn it, and for how long. This applies to both human and synthetic hair but the way the way they should be washed differs.
Before washing either wig make sure you gently comb out any tangles as this will be very difficult to do when the hair is wet. If the wig is synthetic make sure you use a special wig shampoo to wash it as normal hair shampoo will build up on the fibres and shorten their life. Synthetic wigs should be immersed in cold water containing the shampoo and moved around. Gently run your fingers around the inside of the cap to remove any build-up of sweat. Don’t rub the wig at all. The hair should be thoroughly rinsed in clean, cold water. When finished take the wig out of the water and gently squeeze it dry, bit by bit. A spray conditioner is ideal for synthetic fibres. Human hair wigs need to be massaged and lathered in cold water in the same way as washing your own hair, although somewhat more gently to avoid damaging the wig. Make sure the hair does not become tangled and is thoroughly rinsed. The hair can then be gently dabbed dry with a towel and conditioned and rinsed again before removing excess moisture with a towel and leaving it to dry naturally.
If you invest in a wig stand, which will allow the air to circulate around your wig while it is drying and help maintain the shape, your wig should look good for as long as possible.
