Depression has turned out to be a common problem for the present generation. The different types of stress causing factors, a prolonged grief, the inability to cope with failure or defeat, the sudden break-up with your loved one – all of these can pave the way towards depression. We all feel low at some or the other point in our life. To let the sadness linger around us is not a very good idea. One must shed off such gloominess or melancholy before it takes the form of a depression. However, it is easy to speak in such a casual tone whereas in reality, it is very difficult to come to terms with your mind and heart. It is all inside our mind and if we do not control it at a proper time, the mind will begin to control us. Here are some simple tips that might help you to cope with depression and melancholia. 1. Talk about it You must be having some close friends or a family member with whom you can share your troubles. Go ahead and speak out your heart to them. Let them know what troubles your mind and soul. Don’t go for people who will leave you more discouraged and low. Find out someone who will be a very good listener, someone not meant to give you solutions or advice but just lend ears to you. 2. Take up a hobby You need to keep yourself engaged in some kind of job that you like doing. Take up a hobby. If you don’t have one, try to figure out what you love doing. May be, you would love to maintain a garden or bring home a pet. May be you would love spending some time with children or read some interesting novels or watch some foreign films. Don’t sit idle and allow unnecessary thoughts to disturb you. Stay engaged in something or the other, preferably a productive job. 3. Confront the reality If you’re depressed about something, escaping from the same is not a very good idea. Psychologists believe that phobia can be dealt with when you confront the object of your phobia. Similarly, don’t run away from your sadness. Confront it. Find out what are causes behind your depression. If it’s a person, talk to him/her. Talking can save relationships at times. If you think, talking won’t help try to look at the better sides of life. Surely, there are more people on earth who love you for what you are. 4. Socialize It’s time that you make new friends. It’s time that you socialize more with other people. Go out for a movie or for a lunch with friends. However, be careful about making new friends. This is a vulnerable phase and a little flow of sweet words from anyone can touch your heart. Don’t get swayed away by such petty sweet sounding words. Try to judge the person properly before striking a serious friendship. Learn from earlier experiences. 5. Exercise Wake up early in the morning and go out for a walk. The fresh morning air will rebuild your soul and the calm, serene taste of pristine nature will give you newer hopes. Exercise and stay healthy to keep yourself in a good mood. For instance, meditation helps a lot! 6. See a doctor If you find it difficult to cope up with your stress factors on your own, see a counsellor doctor. They know it the best. Bring about new changes To start a phase anew, you have to bring about small changes in your life. You have to let the painful memories go and look forward to the newness of life.
