Surely we have all participated in some occasions in a discussion forum. Sometimes as students but also, it is possible, as a tutor. It is a very useful tool and valued by the students. But we must also know some of its limitations.
A discussion forum is an open space for the discussion of specific topics, with the purpose of allowing groups of common interests to interact, exchanging ideas, theories and opinions.
Internet Forum is also known as message forum, opinion forum or discussion forum and is a web application that supports online discussions or opinions. Get an idea about sociological forum on soziologie-forum.de.
The discussion forum as an asynchronous communication tool in e-Learning, has a number of advantages and disadvantages, among which include:
Advantage:
- The information that is sent to the forum is recorded, so that it can be used at any time.
- It is a very appropriate means to encourage communication and dialogue.
- You can create as many forums as discussion topics emerged.
As an element of a virtual course, the forums are elements of high educational value for the following reasons:
- They favor constructivist learning, because they allow students to read, review and reflect on what is expressed.
- They reinforce personal communication and help develop the sense of a learning community.
- They favor relationships and exchanges of a social nature and promote collaborative learning.
- They help to build knowledge in a group, shared, reinforcing the fact that the student assumes a commitment and a dynamic attitude in their learning.
- They promote a greater degree of interactivity among the participants.
- They involve the student in tasks that require an active participation in the discourse for their learning.
- They help students find solutions to certain problems that may hinder their normal learning pace.
- They enable students to moderate communication in educational processes.
- They allow an active participation and a reflective discussion about the content of the materials.
Disadvantages:
- If they are not well organized (for example, forum by subject) it can be confusing and hinder the search and participation of the students.
- The tutor cannot ensure that the messages sent are read by the student.
- Not all students have the ability to express their ideas in writing in a simple and understandable way.
