A long hot summer is unbearable without a good air conditioning system, so it is important that you try to keep it working well and for as long as possible. Whilst AC is designed to last a good length of time with as little maintenance as possible, there are some things that you can do to give it a helping hand, keep it healthy and lasting longer. Healthy AC also means that it is more efficient, meaning that you aren’t spending unnecessary money just on keeping cool and keeping AC repair costs to a minimum.
AC can be expensive and disruptive to replace or repair, so it is recommended that if you have AC, you keep it well maintained and in good condition to avoid serious problems. Likewise, if you notice a problem it is better to get it looked at straight away instead of waiting for it to get worse.
So, what can you do to keep your AC working better and for longer?
-
Filters – A clogged filter means that your AC will need to work harder, so it is important to regularly check your AC filters. If they need cleaning, clean them as soon as you can to keep your AC as efficient as possible. During the summer, dust and other particles in the air can easily clog up the filters, but they are easy to clean or replace. Generally, your AC filters should be changed about every three months, although you might need to do this more often if you live near a construction site, somewhere windy or somewhere with a higher amount of dust or allergens in the air.
-
Weatherize your home – In the same way that you don’t want the warm air inside your home in the winter to escape, you don’t want your cool, air-conditioned air in the summer to escape, so make sure that your home is prepared. By weatherizing your home, you can help to keep the cool air in, so that your AC doesn’t have to work so hard. Make sure that you don’t leave doors and windows open and try to ensure that there are no gaps by checking seals where the air can escape. You might also like to consider insulating your loft and walls if possible. If you have a window which is exposed to direct sunlight, shut the curtain so that the sunlight can’t get in and warm up the air which is inside, and insulate around the air conditioning ducts so that the air inside them doesn’t heat up unnecessarily.
-
Check-Up – Get your AC checked by an AC maintenance professional before the summer to make sure that everything is working properly and efficiently. This will cut the risk of breakdown as well as ensure that your AC is working at its best. Although you might be spending money now, it will be more cost effective than calling out an emergency AC repair at short notice when something goes wrong.
By helping out your AC, you will keep it working well and for a longer amount of time, meaning a more efficient AC as well as saving energy and money.
