How To Clean Sex Toys? |
Posted: September 29, 2021 |
So how do you clean sex toys? This is a frequently asked question by people who own or are thinking about buying a vibrator, dildo or other sexual toy. The answer isn't always what you think it is. Some examples of porous material include rubber, latex and melamine. Non-porous materials such as acrylic, borosilicate glass, melamine and stainless steel don't require any special cleaning techniques. If you have made a purchase of some new toys, you might want to consider using some common sense when it comes to how you are going to sanitise them. The same applies if you have already used some of your toys on a few occasions. If the toy had been used a number of times, then it's probably safe to sanitise it with standard household soap. But be aware that toys made of delicate materials such as porcelain and stainless steel will need extra care. You should never use a washing up liquid for any porous material toy. Never use soap and water to cleanse toys either. Also, read about how to clean silicone in this post. As regards materials used in vibrators and dildos, it's often best to hand wash rather than soak or use the dishwasher. Hand washed toys will be much easier to sanitise, especially if you use a mild liquid detergent (such as Laundry Soap or Your Chemical Supermarket) and a pH neutral detergent. Don't use any oils (such as those found in nail varnish or coconut oil) to clean them as these can actually harm your vibrator or your toy. Instead use plain lukewarm water. The best way to make sure that your toy is completely clean is to dry it out completely. If you leave it damp it will attract a lot of bacteria which will go from the surface into the porous surface. If you don't dry it properly, you may end up with germs growing on the vibrator. This can cause unpleasant odors and an upset stomach. So remember to dry your toys completely. You can use a normal soap, a mild dishwashing liquid (such as yours), or a baby dishwasher. When it comes to vibrators or dildos, it's important not to use any kind of soap or cleansers as these can destroy the materials. So when you're buying a vibrator, opt for a vibrator which uses non-toxic hypo-allergenic materials or a hypo-allergenic soap and water. Be careful though: some soaps may contain small amounts of lead which can be harmful. After you've thoroughly cleaned your toy, you can now start cleaning the rest of it. It's always best to read the instructions or the label before you start washing any part of the toy. To help eliminate bacteria, try using a sterilizing wipe (one which is not scented or perfumed). Wipe down the entire surface of the toy, but make sure that the area where the head connects to the base is carefully wiped and dried. Use a clean cloth or an alcohol-free and non-perfumed soap to wipe down the rest of the toy. Some toys, especially those used during sexual intercourse, may have delicate areas which cannot be effectively cleaned in a standard soap or water mixture. For these kinds of toys, you can use a special cleaner. This will either be specially formulated or can be purchased in a store where you regularly purchase sex toys. Follow the directions carefully, and make sure to allow the toys to air dry for the best results. Read our another post on how to clean after sex here. If your toys do not come with a container to store them in, you can either boil or microwave them first. Boiling should work fine, but remember that you should only boil water while your silicone toys are hot. Using the microwave should not be a problem, as long as you preheat the water up to the proper temperature. However, it is important that you use gloves when working with any type of soapy water. You certainly don't want to risk getting your hands or fingers badly burned. One tip that some people suggest is to pour some alcohol down the neck of the toy. This will actually destroy the device, so many people think it's a bad idea. Although it will destroy the toy, it won't destroy the protective cover over the internal parts, such as the cells and veins, which makes the toy waterproof. Soap doesn't work like this, because it won't dissolve the material, but you can pour some very hot, soapy water down the neck of the toy to clean it, or even put some alcohol on the blades so you can clean them more easily. Some people recommend rubbing alcohol on the blades as well, but again, this may not be a good idea because the chemical properties of the alcohol may damage the toy beyond repair. Also, check out best way to sanitize sex toys here. It's important that you use the right cleaning materials for the type of toy you're cleaning. Don't use anything that's oil based or petroleum based. Also, be careful not to use any type of soap while cleaning your toy, since that might mean it won't last very long. If you're handy, you could try to just wash the outside with a hose, but this is usually a little tricky and you might end up damaging your toy if you don't know what you're doing. To make sure you do everything safely, it's best to consult a professional toy cleaner.
