The increase in levels of pollution around us, the pollen, increase in the number of allergens have all led to the rise in respiratory problems all around us. These problems are especially high in the children these days. Asthma is one of the chronic respiratory diseases that affects the airways making it difficult for to breathe normally. In children, the air passage is quite small and therefore, this can be a serious problem. People with asthma have swollen and sore lungs and airways.
The typical symptoms of asthma in children include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and trouble breathing. These problems may increase during the night or early mornings. Among the various allergens that could trigger asthma, the most common are pollen, animals, smoke, air pollution, cold air and infections like cold and flu. It is common these days for children below the age of five to develop wheezing tendencies. Often children will gradually grow out of these attacks on crossing the age of five years. One of the most common symptoms in children below five is recurring bronchitis. It is extremely important to consult a doctor when you notice your child having trouble breathing.
If you are looking at how to cure asthma, it is important first to find out which allergen is causing the asthmatic attack. If this triggering allergen can be found, exposure to the allergen can be eliminated. Therefore, an asthma attack can also be avoided. However, once asthma is triggered, quick relief medicines like inhalers are very helpful. Apart from this, long term medication to control asthma would have to be consumed.
Symptoms of bronchitis include, fatigue, shortness of breath, slight fever and chills, chest discomfort and cough. It may sometimes be difficult for parents to judge if their child is wheezing. Most people normally think that their child is breathing with force due to a blocked nose or due to cold. However, one of the ways to find out whether the child is wheezing is by checking if the child is using the muscles in the throat while breathing. If you notice that the child is exerting force on the said muscles just below the throat, the child is most probably wheezing. In such cases, it is important to consult a doctor at the earliest.
Most importantly, there is no need to panic as a parent if your child is wheezing. It is important to stay calm and composed and seek treatment immediately.
