Are Sleeping Patterns and Personalities Connected? |

Most of us are aware that body language can give away a lot about the personality at a conscious level, but fewer people understand how aspects of personality can be detected through the subconscious mind. A scientific analysis of human sleeping patterns has shown that personality can be revealed through the way that people sleep in their beds. Analysis of sleeping positions was carried out for the UK Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service by its director, Professor Chris Idzikowski. He identified a number of sleeping patterns that can be used to identify different types of personality. Back Sleepers with Crossed Arms When they are asleep in their beds, these people tend to lie on their backs with arms crossed above the head. They are intelligent people who are choosy when it comes to love, and who they care about, but they are very enthusiastic about learning new things. Chilled Out Sleeping People who sleep on one side, with one knee bent, are quite chilled out. They have a strong need to relax because they get over-excited very easily and become quite nervous over small issues. They are also known for constantly complaining. Covered-up Sleeping Some people sleep in their beds covered up from head to their toes with a sheet, a duvet or a blanket. These are people who are good at keeping a secret and are unlikely to share their own problems. They might appear brave on the outside, but they are not very open-mined and inside they are quite scared. Foetal Position This sleeping position is particularly common in women. People who adopt the foetal position sleep curled up in their beds, on their left or their right side. These are sensitive people, even though they want to appear tough on the outside. When they make friends with someone, it takes some time for them to feel comfortable with that person. Sleeping in Freefall Freefall sleepers lie in their beds on their fronts, usually with arms around the pillow. These are moody people who are not open to criticism. They are brash and gregarious and they welcome changes in their life. Sleeping Like a Log People who sleep in the log position lie on one side in their beds, with arms down their side and the body kept straight. These are sociable people who don’t like to be on their own and are happy in a crowd. They are easy going individuals who are very trusting, which makes them easily gullible. Sleeping Soldiers Soldiers are people who sleep in their beds on their back, with arms down their sides as if standing to attention. These are shy and quiet people who don’t like to make a fuss when they are with other people. Starfish Sleepers People who lie in their beds on their back, with arms around the pillow, might look like starfish. They don’t like being the centre of attention but they are good communicators and are known for being open-minded. Pillow Hugging Sleepers Sleepers in any of the positions in this list might hug the pillow. When they do this, it’s a strong indication that they like to please others and are always willing to help. They place a lot of importance on family ties, the bonds between friends and the attachment they have with their partner. For this reason, they often purchase stylish beds like a fabric upholstered or faux leather bed to reassure their attachment with their sleeping partner. Yearning Sleepers Yearners sleep in their beds sideways and keep their arms stretched out in front. They are cynical and suspicious types but are open in their own way. Yearners think very hard when they need to reach decision. Once a decision is made, they are very rigid in sticking to it. Changing Position This research, carried out by Professor Idzikowski, revealed that people who said they did not fit in with any of these positions either did not know how they slept or said they could sleep in more than one position. Statistics show that most people do not change their sleep position and no more than 5 percent of people will keep changing position. According to Professor Idzikowski, who also investigated the health implications of different sleeping positions, the freefall sleeping position is the best one for good digestion. The soldier and the starfish position can lead to a bad night’s sleep, because sleeping on your back can cause breathlessness. You are also more likely to snore in those positions.
