Gardening is one of the most relaxing hobbies there are. Studies have shown that people who did gardening had a lower rate of nervous outbursts and migraines and that they’ve shown bigger compassion in social interaction. But, gardening isn’t an easy thing to do. You need a lot of patience, proper tools and you should have all the right gardening tricks up your sleeve. Here are some starting points that will help your gardening sessions. Watering When it comes to watering, you should be careful there. Too much water can destroy a plant so make sure you water in moderation and following the plant type. For instance, vegetable plants and fruits are 75% to 95% water. When sufficient soil moisture is available the plant eating quality, succulence, plant growth and productivity are all improved. In most cases, water is most needed immediately after transplanting, during the first few weeks of plant development and during development of edible plant parts. The best part of day to water is definitely in the morning since disease problems are more likely to get started overnight on wet and cool leaf surfaces. There are several ways you could do this and each comes with a method. Wet the soil around the plant base when hand-watering to prevent plant diseases that are often caused by overhead watering. Other, highly recommended options are soaker hoses and drip systems. They deliver water slowly and directly to the root system and minimize water use. With an automatic watering system you’ll save a lot of your personal time, but be sure to connect everything properly so you don’t waste water. For all of you with a busy work schedule and everyday chaos, opting for automatic systems is probably the best option. They all have built in timers so you can set the time of watering so your plants will stay fresh even when you are not at home. Fertilizing The garden soil doesn’t have all the necessary nutrients to help your plants grow strong. This is why you need to choose good fertilizers as they will supply nutrients to plants when they need them. If you add some organic matter each year, in time the need for fertilizers will decrease. The important thing to know is that not every fertilizer goes with every soil and plant. Make sure you first do a soil test and then purchase a recommended fertilizer. If you are wondering how to know whether the plants have been fertilized enough, they will tell you through their pale leaves, stunted growth and low yields. Also, before planting seeds or transplants apply a thin layer of compost to an area for plants’ better growth. For all the new gardeners it’s important to note that removing of diseased or insect-infested plant material is crucial. If not removed they may shelter overwintering states of these pests from the garden. When removing this debris bag it up and put out for the trash. Don’t put it in the compost pile. Gardening not only relaxes but it also gives you the chance to enjoy the gorgeous result of your work – each time you take a look at your wonderful flowers and trees you’ll feel joy and pride.
